Guided Tours - Travel to ItalyItaly’s Cinque Terre
What It Is
The Cinque Terre (which means “five villages”) is an 11-mile stretch of sheer rocky coastline in northern Italy, noted for its terraced hills and vineyards that slope steeply to the sea. Five tiny, pedestrian-only villages are built into the rocks between the beach and hillsides.

Why You Should Visit
The Cinque Terre is one of the best-preserved natural areas in the entire Mediterranean. With its unique characteristics, the Cinque Terre (also called Cinqueterre) was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and was designated as a protected national park. In addition, the surrounding waters – with their diverse aquatic life and rare corals – were made a marine protected area.

What To Do There
Hiking in the Cinque TerreWith its centuries-old footpaths and mule tracks – winding 1,000 feet above the sea through olive groves, vineyards, orchards and chestnut woods – hiking is a must. (Please note that hiking permits are required and can be obtained at booths along the hiking trails.) Go swimming or snorkeling in the clear waters, or scuba diving in Riomaggiore, or simply wander through the quaint villages and sample local Ligurian dishes with a glass of Cinque Terre wine.

When To Go
You’ll enjoy warm, pleasant weather from late-March through the end of October. High season is from July through mid-September.

THE FIVE VILLAGES
MONTEROSSO AL MARE
, the westernmost of the villages, is recognized for its rugged cliffs, beautiful beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Founded around the 1st century, VERNAZZA has deeply rooted maritime traditions, as evidenced by its impressive loggias, arcades and portals.
CORNIGLIA, located on the ridge of a rocky promontory at the foot of a terraced vineyard, is a traditional farming community noted for its impressive Gothic-Ligurian Church of Saint Peter.
The scenic footpath called La Via dell’Amore or “Lovers’ Pathway” starts in MANAROLA, an ancient port sheltered in a deep gorge between two promontory rocks.
Maintaining both its fishing and agricultural roots, RIOMAGGIORE is the easternmost of the Cinque Terre villages and offers easy access to the region from La Spezia.
